Dubai buyers ask for heavy towels more than any other market we serve.
It is the wrong instinct here, and it costs properties money twice.
GSM means grams per square metre — how much cotton is in the towel.
It is not a quality measure. A poorly made 700 GSM towel is worse than a well-made 550.
Two local conditions decide the right weight.
Humidity.
Coastal UAE stays humid most of the year. A 700 GSM bath towel will not dry fully in the laundry cycle or on the rail between uses.
It goes back damp, and the room develops a smell that housekeeping gets blamed for. Stay at 500 to 600 GSM.
Hard water. UAE supply is largely desalinated and runs hard.
Calcium deposits inside the terry loops, and a very dense pile traps it faster than a lighter one.
A 550 GSM towel opens up again in the wash where a 700 stays stiff.
The working ranges for this climate:
Bath sheet, 90 x 180 cm — 550 to 650 GSM
Bath towel, 70 x 140 cm — 500 to 600 GSM
Hand towel, 40 x 70 cm — 450 to 550 GSM
Face towel, 30 x 30 cm — 450 to 500 GSM
Pool towel, 75 x 150 cm — 400 to 450 GSM, vat dyed colour
Bathmat, 50 x 80 cm — 900 to 1, 000 GSM, never above
Two things matter more than the number. Combed ring spun yarn, which stops lint shedding in the first twenty washes.
And a reinforced double stitched hem, because the commonest reason a commercial towel is discarded is a hem that failed while the terry was still sound.
One question worth asking every supplier: what is the finished GSM after washing, not before. The two are not the same, and the gap is where disappointment comes from.
