Why Towels Stop Absorbing Water — The Softener Problem Explained

A towel that pushes water around instead of taking it up has not worn out. Something is sitting on the fibre. FABRIC SOFTENER IS THE USUAL CAUSE Softener works by coating cotton with a thin water-repellent film. That is the whole mechanism — it makes the towel feel soft by making it slightly waterproof. Use it on terry and absorbency drops, wash after wash, until the towel feels like it is smearing water rather than drying. Stop using softener on towels entirely. In a hotel laundry, that is a line item removed rather than an expense added. THE PART MILLS DO NOT ADVERTISE Some finishes do the same thing on purpose. A heavy softener or silicone finish applied at the mill makes a towel feel plush the moment it comes out of the bag — which is exactly when a buyer judges a sample. It washes out over the first few cycles, and the towel then feels worse than it would have without it. So ask any supplier, including us: what finish is on this towel, and will it still feel like this after five washes? Then wash the sample three times before you decide anything. A sample judged out of the courier bag tells you almost nothing. WHAT GENUINELY MAKES A TOWEL ABSORBENT Weave and weight, not treatment. A dense ground weave with a well-formed pile and combed ring spun yarn. Nothing is sprayed on to achieve it, and nothing washes off. ONE EXCEPTION WORTH KNOWING Zero twist towels are the softest we can make, by a real margin. They are also the shortest lived: they peak in their first weeks and decline faster than ring spun. Right for retail and spa, wrong for a daily hotel rotation. THE QUESTION TO ASK EVERY SUPPLIER Is the quoted weight before washing or after? A towel shrinks 5 to 7 percent across its first three industrial washes, mostly in length. We quote finished post-wash weight in writing.
