It appears on almost every towel quotation into Dubai, and it tells you the one attribute that does not vary between suppliers.
It says nothing about four things that decide whether the towel is still good in year two.
Staple length. Longer staple spins into stronger, smoother yarn. Shorter staple sheds more and weakens sooner. Both are 100% cotton.
Combed or carded. Combing removes the shortest fifteen to twenty percent of fibres before spinning, which is what stops lint shedding through the first twenty washes. Both are 100% cotton.
Twist.
Zero twist is the softest and the shortest lived. Ring spun with normal twist lasts far longer.
Both are 100% cotton.
Finish. A softener makes any towel feel excellent for about three washes.
After that you have whatever, the yarn actually is.
ASK THESE THREE INSTEAD
Is the yarn combed or carded.
Is the quoted GSM before washing or after, and what shrinkage should I expect.
What pile construction is quoted.
Five to seven percent shrinkage over three industrial washes is normal for terry.
A supplier who cannot answer all three is quoting from a catalogue, not from production.
AND TWO THINGS SPECIFIC TO THE GULF
Hard water. UAE supply is largely desalinated.
Calcium deposits in the terry loops and the pile stiffen.
Ring spun recovers better than zero twist, and a 500 to 600 GSM towel opens up again in the wash where a 700 stays stiff.
Humidity. A heavy towel will not dry fully between uses on this coast, and that becomes a smell complaint rather than a weight complaint.
Dubai buyers ask for heavy towels more than any market we serve. It is the wrong instinct here, and it costs twice — once at purchase and again on every laundry cycle.
