The Hem Fails Before the Towel Does

Most commercial towels are thrown away with the pile still sound. What went was the hem. It comes apart in an industrial dryer, the towel starts unravelling from the edge, and housekeeping pulls it out of circulation while the terry itself had another year in it. Nobody specifies for this. Weight gets specified, colour gets specified, yarn sometimes. The hem is assumed. WHAT TO ASK FOR A reinforced double stitched hem as standard. On gym, pool and other high-rotation stock, a double lock stitch, which holds under hot sanitising cycles and high tumble heat. If a quotation does not mention the hem, it is a plain single-stitch hem. That is not dishonest, it is just the default, and defaults are where towel programmes quietly lose money. The cost difference per piece is small. The difference in service life is not. TWO RELATED POINTS Bathrobe belt loops should be sewn through, not surface stitched, for the same reason. And order spare belts with the original order rather than after the problem appears — belts go missing continuously, and a robe without a belt is unusable. Bathmats need a wider hem than towels. They are stepped on, dragged with a foot and pulled up wet, and a narrow towel hem tears out.
