Towel Shrinkage — How Much Cotton Terry Loses, and Where

Cotton terry shrinks 5 to 7 percent over its first three industrial washes, and most of it comes out of the length rather than the width. On a 140 cm bath towel that is up to 10 cm. It is not a defect. Terry is woven under tension on two warps, and the first hot washes release that tension. Any supplier promising zero shrinkage on 100 percent cotton is either pre-shrinking heavily, which costs weight, or guessing. WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT Specify the size you want after washing, not before, and get the supplier to confirm which one they quoted. Ask the same about weight: a 500 GSM pre-wash figure and a 500 GSM post-wash figure are two different towels at two different prices. Then wash your sample three times before measuring anything. We quote finished post-wash weight and finished post-wash dimensions, in writing, on every quotation.
