The bath towel is the highest volume item in any towel programme, which means a small specification error multiplies across thousands of pieces.
Three decisions settle it.
WEIGHT
500 to 600 GSM is right for most guest rooms. 550 to 650 for bath sheets. Luxury properties in cool climates can go to 700.
Heavier is not automatically better.
Above 600 GSM a towel takes noticeably longer to dry, costs more in the dryer on every cycle, and in a humid market will not dry between uses at all.
The room then develops a smell that housekeeping gets blamed for, and nobody connects it to the purchase order.
US buyers specifying in pounds per dozen: 13 to 15 lb/dz for mid-market and upscale, 15 to 17 for luxury bath sheets.
Send the size with the number, because lb/dz moves with size as well as density.
YARN
Combed ring spun removes the short fibres before spinning.
Those short fibres are what shed as lint in a towel's first fifteen to twenty washes, and a new programme that covers guest bathrooms in lint gets noticed in reviews.
Worth paying for in four- and five-star rooms.
Not worth it in budget properties or gyms, where standard ring spun at the right weight does the job.
Zero twist is the softest and the shortest lived. Suites and spas yes. Gyms, pools and hot sanitising laundries no.
HEM
Reinforced and double stitched.
The commonest reason a commercial bath towel is discarded is not worn terry — it is a hem that came apart in an industrial dryer while the pile was still good.
If a quotation does not mention the hem, it is a plain single stitch.
SIZES
70 x 140 cm, or 27 x 54 inches, is the standard almost everywhere.
90 x 180 cm, or 35 x 70 inches, for bath sheets.
100 x 150 cm bath sheets in the UK and parts of Europe.
ONE QUESTION BEFORE YOU ORDER
Is the quoted weight before washing or after. Terry loses weight in finishing, and a pre-wash figure is always higher than what reaches your linen room.
Expect 5 to 7 percent shrinkage over the first three industrial washes.
