600 GSM is the most requested weight in hospitality, and it is right about half the time.
GSM means grams per square metre — how much cotton is in the towel. It is a measure of density, not quality. A badly made 600 GSM towel is worse than a well-made 500 GSM one, because absorbency comes from weave and yarn, and only partly from weight.
Where 600 GSM is correct:
Four- and five-star hotel bath towels and bath sheets. European, UK and Gulf properties. Spa treatment rooms. Anywhere the guest is meant to notice the towel and laundry capacity is not the binding constraint.
Where 600 GSM is the wrong answer:
Humid climates — Singapore, the Maldives, coastal Southeast Asia. A 600 GSM towel will not dry between uses at 80% humidity and the room develops a smell. Use 500.
Gyms — 250 to 400 wash cycles a year. Heavy towels cost more to dry and hold moisture. Use 400–450.
Pool and beach — outdoor drying, high turnover. Use 400–450.
High-volume budget properties — the laundry cost difference across thousands of pieces is real money, and the guest is not paying for the towel.
What 600 GSM actually costs you. You are buying cotton by the kilo, so moving 500 → 600 GSM adds roughly 20% cotton content, and the price moves close to that. It also adds drying time and energy cost on every single wash for the life of the towel. That running cost is usually larger than the purchase price difference.

What matters more than the number: combed ring spun yarn (stops lint shedding in the first twenty washes), a properly constructed ground weave, and a reinforced double-stitched hem. Those three decide whether the towel is still good at wash 200.
