One-side terry is a towel with pile loops on one face and a flat woven surface on the other.
It is one of the products we run most often, and one of the least understood by buyers who have only ever specified standard terry.

WHAT IT IS
Standard terry has loops on both faces, formed by a separate pile warp lifting on each side of the ground weave.
One-side terry lifts the pile on one face only.
The reverse stays flat.
The result is a towel that absorbs on the loop side and gives you a clean, smooth surface on the other.
It is lighter than double-sided terry at the same quality of yarn, and it costs less, because there is simply less cotton in it.
WHERE THE FLAT FACE EARNS ITS PLACE
Printing. A flat surface takes a printed image properly. Loops do not.
If you want a logo, an artwork or a full design on a towel, one-side terry or terry velour is how it is done.
This is why almost every printed promotional towel you have seen is built this way.
Embroidery. A flat face gives a stable base and a cleaner finish than stitching into a loop pile.
Golf and sports towels. Flat side for the logo, loop side for the job.
Beach and pool programmes with artwork. The flat face carries the design, the loop face dries the guest.
Kitchen, bar and cleaning towels. The flat side wipes and polishes without leaving lint; the loop side absorbs.
Retail and gift programmes where the towel is judged on how it looks folded on a shelf.
WHERE IT IS THE WRONG CHOICE
Hotel guest room bath towels. Guests expect pile on both faces, and a flat back reads as cheap in a bathroom whatever the weight says.
Anywhere maximum absorbency matters. Half the pile means less absorbency, and no finish changes that.
Spa and luxury programmes, unless the flat face is specifically wanted for branding.
THE HONEST TRADE-OFF
You are buying less cotton, so you get a lower price and a lighter towel, and you give up absorbency and the plush feel on one side.
That is the whole equation. Anyone selling one-side terry as equivalent to double-sided terry at a better price is selling you the missing cotton as a feature.
Where the flat face does a job — printing, embroidery, wiping — it is the correct product, and the cost saving is genuine.
Where it does not, specify double-sided and pay for the pile.

ON PRINTING, SO YOU ARE NOT MISLED
Sublimation printing bonds only to polyester.
It does not bond to cotton.
There is no such thing as a sublimated 100 percent cotton towel, and if one is quoted to you, either the towel is not cotton or the colour will not last.
On cotton, the real options are reactive printing, which bonds with the fibre and holds through washing, and pigment printing, which sits on the surface, costs less, stiffens the printed area and fades.
Reactive for a programme you want reordered. Pigment for a giveaway used a dozen times.
Printed goods carry a minimum per design, not only per order, because each design needs its own screens or engraving.
