Roll a towel tightly from one end. If it forms a clean cylinder with the edges staying aligned, the cut is square and the ground weave is holding. If it skews, twists, or one end finishes wider than the other, the towel has gone out of square.
Do it after three washes, not before. Before washing, almost everything rolls neatly.
WHY IT HAPPENS
The ground weave is the base cloth that holds the pile loops.
A good pile on a weak ground distorts in the wash, and the towel comes back a parallelogram rather than a rectangle.
It is rarely visible when the towel is new and flat.
It becomes obvious rolled on a shelf or hung over a rail with one corner lower than the other.
WHY ROLLED DISPLAY IS WORTH THINKING ABOUT
Pools, spas and gyms display towels rolled for practical reasons.
Rolling creases less than folding and rolled stock suits the low open shelving used poolside.
Rolling also exposes construction.
A towel with uneven pile or a soft ground looks noticeably worse rolled than folded, which is why some suppliers prefer to photograph folded.
Waffle is the exception — it creases more than terry and does not roll as cleanly, because there is no pile to hide the fold lines.
For rolled spa display, terry is the better choice.
COLOURS IN THIS PHOTOGRAPH
Deep teal and charcoal belong near water.
Specify them vat dyed, so the colour sits inside the fibre and holds through chlorine, hot washing and UV.
Dusty pink is a guest room and retail colour.
Reactive dyeing is correct and costs less — but keep pastels away from pool and salon areas, where they go patchy rather than fading evenly.
White stays white where it can be bleached.
Bath towel 70 x 140 cm, 500 to 600 GSM.
Pool towel 75 x 150 cm, 400 to 450 GSM, vat dyed. Expect 5 to 7 percent shrinkage over three industrial washes.
