Buyers assume the cheaper one is the better deal.
Often, it is a different product.
GSM tells you how much cotton is in the towel.
It tells you nothing about four things that decide how it performs.
Yarn. Combed removes the short fibres, which is what stops lint shedding in the first twenty washes.
Carded does not.
Pile construction.
Three pick terry is the cheap default.
Five pick locks each loop in more firmly and the pile stays upright longer.
Loop height. Two towels at the same GSM can have very different pile.
Taller feels plusher, shorter dries faster and lasts better.
Ground weave. The base cloth holds the loops.
A good pile on a weak ground comes back out of square.
Ask any supplier three questions: is the yarn combed or carded, is the GSM before washing or after, and what pile construction is quoted.
Someone close to production answers all three without pausing.
