Buyers compare suppliers on FOB price per piece.
It is the easiest number to compare and the one that tells you least about what you actually pay.
FREIGHT IS CHARGED ON THE BOX
A half-empty 20 ft container costs close to what a full one costs.
Every piece you leave out raises the freight on every piece you ship.
That is why the cheaper FOB quote is sometimes the more expensive towel.
Compare landed cost per piece at a full container. Consolidating sizes into one shipment reaches a full load sooner than ordering bath towels alone.
DUTY FOLLOWS CLASSIFICATION
Cotton terry toilet linen is commonly HS 6302.60. Bathrobes are not linen — they are apparel, Chapter 61 or 62, at a different rate.
Buyers who assume one code for the whole order find out at clearance.
COSTS THAT APPEAR AFTER ARRIVAL
Relabelling, if the labels are wrong for that market.
Bilingual for Canada, RN number and care labels for the US, Spanish for Mexico.
Doing it in a destination warehouse costs many times what doing it in the factory costs.
Repacking, if cartons are not counted and barcoded at origin.
Biosecurity.
Untreated wood packaging into Australia or New Zealand means a held container and a treatment fee.
THE COST THAT NEVER APPEARS ON ANY INVOICE
A towel specified for the wrong conditions.
A 700 GSM towel in a humid property will not dry.
Zero twist in a gym will not survive the wash cycle. Reactive dye at the pool goes patchy in a season.
In each case the purchase price was fine and the replacement cycle doubled.
That is usually the largest number in the exercise, and it is invisible at quotation stage.
HOW TO COMPARE PROPERLY
Ask for landed, not FOB. Ask for the container piece count.
Ask whether the quoted weight is before washing or after.
Then tell the supplier your climate, water and laundry protocol and see whether the specification changes.
A supplier who quotes the same towel regardless of where it is going has not priced your job.
They have priced a towel.
